Owner Surrender

**IMPORTANT UPDATE (November 2020)- We are currently operating at maximum capacity and are on an Intake Freeze for the foreseeable future.  We will not be accepting any NEW animals into care until further notice.  The only exception is in regards to animals previously adopted from us that need to come back into care.  It is mandatory for any animal adopted from us to be returned and these intakes are given priority, always.  Please email katskrittersmb@gmail.com if you are no longer able to care for an animal you previously adopted.**

************************************************************************

*We take intake requests by EMAIL ONLY.*

**Please note that Kat’s Kritters Rescue is transitioning away from a traditional adopting rescue towards a Sanctuary for less adoptable animals.  As such, our ability to intake new animals has decreased and our focus is on orphaned neonates, senior animals, animals with high medical needs, or animals with certain behavioural challenges (shy, feral, etc.). We will continue to intake animals when space, time, and resources allow and will continue to adopt out certain animals, or transfer to a partner organization for adoption. Due to our current set up, we are only able to accept animals at this time that are proven to be social with other animals.

*IMPORTANT! – Animals previously adopted from Kat’s Kritters Rescue MUST be returned to us if you are no longer able to keep them.*

Do you have a pet you are unable to keep or provide care for?   If you are considering surrendering a cat or dog to the rescue, please note the following information and contact us at katskrittersmb@gmail.com.

*IMPORTANT: The rescue can only accept new animals into care as space allows. We also receive no government funding of any kind. We exist solely on donations, both monetary and supplies, to keep going.  Our financial and/or supply situation must also be taken into account each time someone requests that we accept a new animal into our program.  Please be understanding of our position and be patient. While we would love to help every animal in need, immediately, it is not always possible! Should we be unable to assist you, please contact the many other shelter or rescue organizations in the province. Don’t give up! You may be the only one looking out for the welfare of the animal!

*Note Regarding Kitten and Puppy Surrenders* – If you are surrendering kittens or puppies to the rescue and you plan to keep the mom, we will require that the mom be spayed to prevent future litters. We can assist with cost through our Subsidized Spay/Neuter Program (info under the Community Services tab).

Why surrender to a rescue rather than try to rehome or sell on your own?  If you have a close friend or family member that you trust, and that is familiar with your pet, then certainly the transition to a new home would be easier for all concerned if you are able to rehome your pet this way.  However, if you are considering advertising your pet for sale or as “free to good home” on the internet or some other way, please reconsider!! Unfortunately, there are many awful people in the world and there are many instances of people obtaining pets through the classified ads only to use them as bait in dog fighting rings, to use them in backyard breeding operations, to sell them for profit, etc. You have no way of knowing exactly what will become of your pet, whether they will receive the vet care they need, whether they will be treated kindly, etc.  Surrendering your pet to a reputable rescue organization will ensure that your pet receives all necessary veterinary care and that all potential adopters are thoroughly screened.  Also, reputable rescues, such as Kat’s Kritters Rescue, have contracts in place with all adopters stating that the adopted animal must be returned to the rescue if the pet ever needs to be rehomed.  This is a great security to know that your pet will have the support of the rescue for life.

OWNER SURRENDER

If you have a personal pet that you are unable to provide care for or are unable to keep, please email us at katskrittersmb@gmail.com to make a request to surrender your pet into rescue.  Provide as much information as possible, including your pet’s breed, age, size, sex, health status, whether spayed/neutered, vaccinated, any behaviour issues, and why you must rehome.  Be honest. All information, including any “bad” behaviour, is important.  If your pet has a history of aggression towards people or animals, it must be disclosed.  Once we receive your request, we will contact you regarding whether or not we are currently in a position to assist.  If so, we will send you our Owner Surrender form to complete and will set up an appointment with you to surrender your pet.
